stem cells transplantation

Could I ever be a stem cell donor for my mom? (Multiple Myeloma)?

My 70 year old mother was just diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma and may have to undergo stem cell transplantation…they may use her own cleaned up cells but I wondered how likely I could be a match if necessary? And why would she possibly need a donor?

Unfortunatly, the age may be a factor. Most older patients cannot handle the preperative regimen very well.
As far as you being a match, children have a 1 in chance of matching their parent. Most insurance companies will only pay to test siblings, so you need to either sign up on the registry or pay out of pocket for the HLA tissue typing.

Using her own cells is an option because it is easier. She will engraft sooner and easier and possibly better than with a donor. However, relapse chances are high.
A donor is harder, takes longer to engraft. But the chances of relapse are lower
