What’s the latest news on stem cell research?
Is it true, stem cells are too complicated to be used in the doctor’s clinic?
How soon can we see them being used in every-day culture injection?
They’re incredibly complicated in that getting them to turn into the cells we want (and not turn cancerous once they are in the patient) is… tricky, to say the least. So far, we’re seeing limited attempts at using them that are showing promising results… so far. Really, the big jump forward in the past few years has been the creation of induced pluripotent stem cells (iPS) cells, which can be made from a few skin cells of your body. Not only does this get around the ethical problems people have had with embryonic stem cells in the past, it gets around any problem of immune rejection, which is a huge leap. Its been demonstrated in animal models how iPS cells can be used to treat a variety of diseases, especially blood-based diseases such as sickle-cell anemia. There was also an advance last year where the first sucessful trachea transplant was performed with NO need for immunosuppresants.
As for every day… probably a LOOOOOOOOONG time from now, if ever.
